Saint of the Week

St. Nicholas of Myra

Bishop of Myra, Wonderworker

Feast: December 6

Icon of St. Nicholas of Myra

St. Nicholas was the 4th-century bishop of Myra in Lycia (modern-day Turkey). Beloved throughout the Christian world, he is known for his secret gift-giving — tossing bags of gold through a poor family's window at night to save three daughters from slavery. He defended the Orthodox faith at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea and, according to tradition, struck the heretic Arius for blaspheming Christ. He is the patron of travelers, sailors, children, and the poor. His relics rest in Bari, Italy, and stream a fragrant myrrh to this day — earning him the title "the Myrrh-streamer."

A Prayer to St. Nicholas

O blessed Nicholas, the namesake of victory, thou holy hierarch and wonderworker of Christ, who didst come to the aid of those in peril on the sea, who didst secretly provide for the impoverished, and who didst defend the innocent: I am in need of thy swift help. Thou art the image of gentleness and the teacher of temperance, and all the world has found thee to be a champion in times of trouble. Cease not to intercede with Christ our God for those who honor thy holy memory with faith and love. Amen.

About Hear Our Prayer

A Treasury ofOrthodox Prayer

Hear Our Prayer was born from a simple conviction: the prayers of the Orthodox Church belong to everyone. For two thousand years, the Church has given us words when our own fall short — prayers for every hour of the day, every season of life, and every condition of the human heart.

Whether you are Orthodox and looking to deepen your prayer life, or someone exploring this ancient faith for the first time, you are welcome here. Every prayer on this site is drawn from the liturgical services, the prayer books, the writings of the Holy Fathers, and the lived practice of the faithful across two millennia.

Founded by entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude treats the toughest childhood cancers and pediatric diseases, and families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food.
